M. Rajeshwar Rao was appointed Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India in October 2020. He oversees matters related to regulation, risk monitoring, internal audit, enforcement, legal affairs and corporate communications.

He has spent almost four decades at the Reserve Bank of India in various departments, including financial market operations, internal debt management, foreign exchange management, banking regulation, and international department. He has also worked in four of Reserve Bank’s regional offices and as the Banking Ombudsman in New Delhi. As Executive Director, he was the RBI’s representative on the Markets Committee of the BIS.
